  • 12 hours of sewing tuition over 4 weeks

  • One PDF sewing pattern from the SELF MADE SURROUNDINGS pattern Collection. 

You will have the choice of the following beginner friendly patterns; 

  • SOFTDAY Trouser

  • EASE Skirt

What You will create

Working at your own pace over the 4 sewing sessions you will create;

  • Series of construction samplers 

  • Compile garment construction notes

  • Make 1 lower body garment

What you will learn

During the duration of the 4 weeks you will learn a basic understanding of a foundational sewing skills including;

  • Getting to know how your sewing machine works

  • Learn to thread your sewing machine and trouble shoot issues

  • Understand Woven Fabric properties and terminology

  • Measuring your body and selecting a pattern size

  • Simple pattern alteration to improve personalised fit

  • Reading pattern instructions 

  • Correct cutting out techniques

  • Cutting out a garment

  • Construction pressing

Through your selected sewing project you will learn the following transferable garment construction techniques;

  • Range of seam finishes

  • Heming techniques

  • In seam pockets

  • Patch pockets

  • Elasticated waistline

  • Draw string casing

What you will need to Provide

  • Basic sewing machine

  • Basic sewing kit (cutting out scissors, small sharp scissors, pins, tape measure and quick unpick)

  • Appropriate woven fabric for your chosen projects

  • Haberdashery required for your project (for example thread, elastic etc.)

  • Printed Pattern in your chosen size (option for printing at a copy shop or at home on your printer) 

  • Ring binder for compiling samplers and construction notes

  • No, you can come as a complete beginner and Nyssa will guide you through the whole process.

  • Yes, included in the price is one PDF sewing pattern from the SELF MADE SURROUNDINGS pattern collection. You have the choice between the ‘Softday Trousers’ or the ‘Ease Skirt’. Both are yours to keep and make again as many times as you like for yourself or friends and family.

  • The pattern collection has been drafted to cover AUS 6-26

  • Each session runs for 3 hours. In that time you will be able to make progress on your projects and fully immerse yourself in your individual learning journey.

  • No, there is no expectation to complete work between the weekly sessions. However, practicing some of the skills you have learnt that week, if you can make time, will improve your sewing accuracy and knowledge quicker.

  • As the venue needs to be hired each time a class runs, we are unable to offer make up classes. However Nyssa will help you to catch up in the next session and can make suggestions for activities at home so you can progress your project in your own time.

  • Yes you will need to provide your own sewing machine and basic sewing kit as listed above. Nyssa will provide all other equipment needed.

    Working with your own machine means you will gain greater independence with your sewing practice.

  • As you will be in a workshop environment, for safety reasons, please attend class with your hair tied back and closed toe shoes.  When sewing, it is best to wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.
